What is the World Fitness Project (WFP)?

The World Fitness Project (WFP) is a competitive fitness league that presents itself under the motto “For Athletes, By Athletes”. In 2027 its season is the World Fitness Series, with 10 qualifying events on 4 continents and a World Fitness Championship as the goal. It is not a stage of the CrossFit Games: it is a different competition with its own rules.

In a nutshell

WFP runs functional fitness competitions for athletes of every level: from someone competing online at their gym to the professionals. It describes itself as an organisation where people come first and says it wants to offer a path for athletes at every stage of their journey.

Its flagship is the Pro circuit, which pays prize money and offers contracts to the best. Around it are other pieces: the Rec League, Project 1, Challengers, and teams and Next Gen.

WFP’s building blocks

  • Pro (professional circuit). The world’s best athletes compete for rankings, prize money and Pro Cards, contracts for the season’s best.
  • Challengers. Athletes without a Pro Card who earn a place in the Pro circuit through online qualifiers. In 2026 they compete in the same Pro division as Signed Pros.
  • Teams and Next Gen. Elite teams of four and young athletes.
  • Rec League. An online-only competition with a US$15 entry that does not qualify you for in-person events. It lets you compare your score with the community from your own gym.
  • Project 1. A hybrid test open to everyone: six 800-metre runs with rowing, bike, ski, sandbag and carry stations, with a 50-minute time cap.

How the 2027 season looks

In 2027 the season is organised as the World Fitness Series: 10 events from 16 April to 7 November, in Europe, North America, South America and Oceania. Each event awards spots to the World Fitness Championship, whose venue and date are still to be confirmed. Every stop is a partner event: none is organised directly by WFP. There is a full guide in “WFP 2027: how the season works”.

How it differs from the CrossFit Games

The most important difference is structure. The CrossFit Games are a four-stage season with one path for everyone: Open, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Games. WFP works as a network of independent events that award spots to a Championship.

What you should know if you’re starting now

You don’t have to be a professional. Many Series events open with an online qualifier you can enter from your gym, and there are divisions for Masters, pairs, teams and young athletes. The first step is to pick an event and a division and read its rulebook. We explain it in “How to qualify in WFP”.
